I have further investigated what is going on and it seems somewhat
odd.  I wrote two programs in /u/fowler/geomview/square.  square sends
the following to geomview:

(new-geometry square < csquare.quad )
(xform square { 2 0 0 0  0 1 0 0  0 0 1 0  0 0 0 1 } )

square2 sends the following to geomview:
(new-geometry square < csquare.quad ) (xform square { 2 0 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 0 1 } )


The output from square works if it is just typed into geomview.  The
output from square2 works, but produces error messages about reference
counts being less than zero.

If square is run as an external module, it gets the square on the
screen but doesn't apply the transform and then gives an error message
about the reference counts.  square2 seems to do them same thing, but
it's somewhat unpredictable.

I'm using the version of geomview in
/u/gcg/ngrap/src/bin/geomview/gl/gv
