Actually everyone can have what they want on this.  I was planning to
make the shell script sensitive to an environment variable and just
hadn't gotten around to it yet.  Once that is done, people wanting
command-line arguments can write their own shell script wrapper which
converts an argument value into an environment variable, exports it,
and then calls the real shell script.

This way, the real shell script stays simple and yet flexible enough
for power users to have the power they want.

How's that?
