Well, I coaxed the script to, I think, completion.

Here are my suggestions for improvements:

Handle partial installs gracefully - make the log reflect where the  
failure happened _and_ what is left to be done

Make the Makefile fial gracefully - allow it to skip targets that  
fail, noting them with a message, and continue with the next target.

What was happening to me was I had some symlinks from /usr/local/bin  
to /usr/local/geomview in my old installation to save space, but the  
script wanted to overwrite them and got worried that it would  
overwrite files with themselves (appropriately enough).
