Oh, sorry, should have mailed to software. This behavior was a long-standing
bug in behavior of handles/file references. Geomview 1.4.2 includes a
fix for it: any construct of the form
appearance { ... } : handle
or appearance { ... } < file
is now silently re-interpreted as
appearance { ... } INST geom : handle or etc.
i.e. an INST is inserted to hold the appearance.
