You can use the CBEZ format, which includes one color for each corner of
the patch, and interpolates across the patch.  For example

          0.5   -1.0  -1.0   
          0.5   -0.5   1.0   
          0.5    0.5   1.0   
          0.5    1.0  -1.0   
         1.0    -1.0   1.0   
         1.0    -0.5   1.0   
         1.0     0.5   1.0  
         1.0     1.0   1.0   
1 0 0 1     0 1 0 1
0 0 1 1     1 1 1 1

creates a patch with corners colored red, green, blue, and white, respectively.
