If I understand you correctly, it sounds as though Machten's "make" has
the same peculiarity as that on DEC OSF/1.  If so, follow the instructions
given in INSTALL.x11 for the DEC Alpha, i.e. edit makefiles/Makedefs.global
and change the line

MKFILEDIR = ${GEOM}/makefiles

to

MKFILEDIR = .
