If so, they're rendered by default as rather finely-divided meshes, to ensure they look smooth. You could improve speed quite a bit by adjusting the "patch dicing" number down from 10, to say 2 or 3. It's on the Appearance panel, or alternatively type "2ad" or "3ad" with the cursor in a graphics window.
