We'd just heard from someone else with this problem.  They found that
someone had changed the permissions on the (normally public)
/etc/hosts file so that it couldn't be read by the world, and that caused
this GL error.  If it's indeed unreadable for you -- or if /etc/resolv.conf
is likewise unreadable -- try getting the system administrator to say, as root,
   chmod a+r /etc/hosts  (or /etc/resolv.conf)
