Yes Peter, something can indeed be done. You can try downloading a beta
prerelease of the next version of Geomview. This does provide support
for 16 bits as well as several other bug fixes, though it is not
guaranteed to be as stable. Just ftp to ftp.geom.umn.edu and grab:

/priv/daeron/bin/gvx.linux.gz

This is a drop in replacement for your gvx binary, so you should *NOT*
delete your current installation of the Geomview distribution. Simply
gunzip and rename the downloaded file to "gvx". Then use it to replace
the "gvx" in your current installation. Please tell us if it works for
you.
