Yes, the situation with Geomview has gotten rather confusing with all
the various versions of Irix out there, combined with different
versions of GL.

Probably you should just get and install the new Geomview distribution

   ftp.geom.umn.edu:pub/software/geomview/geomview-opengl-irix5.tar.Z

Even though this says "irix5", it will run under Irix 6.  The older
Geomview distributions don't run under Irix 6 because they were compiled
under Irix 4 (Irix 4 binaries run under Irix 5 but not Irix 6).

in explained in the chart below (which is excerpted from the
README file in the Geomview distribution directory).

    Use the following chart to decide which SGI distribution is most
    appropriate for your situation:

    (1) machines whose native installation of GL is Iris GL; currently
	(May 1996) this includes most SGI graphics hardware, in particular
	XL, XZ, Extreme, Elan, VGX, Reality Engine, Personal Irises.

    (2) machines whose native installation of GL is Open GL; currently
	(May 1996) this includes all Impact and Infinite Reality graphics
	workstations.

    (3) geomview-sgi.tar.Z requires the patch file
	irix5-irisgl-patch.tar.Z (or *.gz) in order to run on Irix 6.x
	systems (because geomview-sgi.tar.Z contains Irix 4 GL
	binaries, which do not run on Irix 6.x systems). See the notes
	for irix5-irisgl-patch.tar.* below if you decide to get this.

    (4) May work, but slowly, and only if the patch described in (3) above
	is applied.  For these machines it's better to use the Open GL
	version of Geomview.

    (5) runs wherever SGI supports OpenGL graphics, which includes all
	graphics adaptors except for the G, GT, and GTX.  For VGX, VGXT,
	and Personal Iris system, you'll need at least IRIX 5.3.
