>From reading through your problems, it appears that you were
using the latest official release.  There is a patched version
that fixes some of these problems available as:

     ftp.geom.umn.edu:/priv/slevy/geomview-161p9-src.tar.gz

This version should be better behaved with lesstif, which I
assume is what you're linking against in Debian.

Please try this and let us know if you still have problems.
