    async_fnextc() is part of the OOGL utility library (-loogl), which
graffiti as well as other external geomview modules use.  It's
documented in the file GEOMROOT/src/lib/util/ooglutil.h.  Actually,
what's really documented there is fnextc(); async_fnextc() is
identical except that it returns (the value NODATA) immediately if no
data is available, rather than blocking until data appears.
