Ack.  There's a problem with the way appearances are handled; basically the
control panels try to override all other settings.  Someday I'll fix this,
but in the meantime, you can beat the obstinate panels by putting a "*"
(override marker) in front of the appearance keyword(s), as in

 (merge-ap  thing  { material { *edgecolor 1 1 0   *diffuse 0 .5 .8 } })
