Curious -- did you ever try StereoView again, and if so how did it go?

One possible problem occurs to me.  The FORMS library (at least version 2.0,
which all our software uses) does not work for some reason with 
distributed GL; you must execute geomview and its external modules 
on the same machine where you're sitting, i.e. the DISPLAY environment
variable must be set to ":0" or "unix:0".  FORMS-using programs
seem to hang if this is not the case: their windows appear, but they're
more or less unresponsive.  Could this have caused the problems you saw?
