nevermind--I found the problem--my (silly) mistake.
The troublesome file which begins
ND-color xy
should have begun
(ND-color xy
So the missing "(" was the problem.
Of course the mistake was mine, and one I should have caught. In
part I was thrown off by the messages (which I didn't understand, and
still don't). I'm not a lisp-person and I know that the lisp
interpreter for geomview is minimal--but if someone in the future is
working on this part of the code, it might be worthwhile to put in a
parentheses checker/message. Lack of parentheses matching is one of
the syntax errors that a user is most likely to bump into.
