A dodecahedron (dodec.off) might make a nice vertex marker, especially for the
Penrose etc. tilings with their tenfold symmetry.

To make scalable edges, I guess you could replace them with long narrow
rectangular quadrilaterals -- if narrower than the vertex blob, their stubby
ends would be hidden inside it.
