I just tried this on a sgi... it has the same effect there.

Namely, settting the world appearance to csmooth has the effect of setting
the world and all geom's within the world at the time to csmooth. But any
geom loaded after the world was set to csmooth does not get displayed as
csmooth, even though the user interfaces correctly? reflects the geom as
having the appearance of csmooth.

This happens regardless of how the world appearances are getting set.

By, '(merge-ap g0 appearance {* shading csmooth })' or via the user
interface.

I am not sure about appearances in general or do I know how the override
business is supposed to work... anyone?
