Thanks for your timely reply. Our group is somewhat different than most in that 
we have no system administrator, or more aptly we all do our own system network
administration. However, our R5 library is somewhat different from yours. The 
contents of our /etc/filesets/X11R5-SHLIBS (which is the same as our /usr/lib/
X11R5 directory listing) is:

/usr/lib/X11R5/libX11.sl
/usr/lib/X11R5/libXhp11.sl
/usr/lib/X11R5/libXt.sl
/usr/lib/X11/XKeysymDB
/usr/lib/Motif1.2/libXm.sl
/system/X11R5-SHLIBS/CDFinfo
/system/X11R5-SHLIBS/copyright
/system/X11R5-SHLIBS/customize
/system/X11R5-SHLIBS/kernrel
/system/X11R5-SHLIBS/pdf
/system/X11R5-SHLIBS/index

(Do you have system 9.03 of HP-UX?)  Anyway, if that is the only unreferenced 
library call, it would be a lot easier to just copy libXext.sl than ftp a full 
blown statically linked version. But I don't know if other unreferenced lib 
calls might exist.
