Thanks.  Daeron and I tried it out.  Faces now look fine.
Now that the level of clutter is down, though, it appears edges
weren't quite right after all; they seem correct at normal line width,
but linewidth > 1 produces
   - lines still drawn 1 pixel wide, but 
   - lines are surrounded by wider swaths of background color
It's kind of a cool effect: when lines happen to be drawn in the proper
order, you get a sort of "haloing" a la Unreal.    For large line widths,
the halo width doesn't seem to depend on the linewidth, and isn't always
symmetrical about the line; it's possible it's just always 8 bits.
