Other people have encountered this too, but it doesn't seem to happen for us.
Could you tell us more about your environment -- e.g. which version of SunOS,
and whether you're using MIT's X or Sun Open Windows, and which version?

Re visualizing things in higher dimensions: there's some provision in geomview
for viewing higher-dimensional objects by projection into 3-space.  In
order to get something where visual inspection will help, the object you're
examining has to be at most 2-D, i.e. not filling the whole space, of course.
Are you effectively studying a scalar field in a higher-dimensional space?

Some preprocessing might yield digested forms where visualization could
help.  For example, I'd seen 3-D fluid flows visualized by tracing regions of
maximum vorticity -- typically lines in 3-space marking vortex cores.
