[ REQ 6836]: pick function GEOMID

I am trying to use the pick function to identify different objects 
with the mouse.  Everything is working in my test program, however
the GEOMID field is not what I expected.  When I issue gcl commands
I reference objects using the g? identifier that appears in the
Targets list in the main panel.  But pick is returning the file
name of the object, possibly with a <?> indicating the ?th copy of
the original object.  I would prefer having g? identifiers.  Is
there any way to configure geomview to return g? id's instead of
the file_name<?> id's?  Thanks in advance.
