thanks stuart.  the sysadmin here had neglected to install
them; they're there now.  

it took a fair amount of systems hacking (without superuser) to
get to the point where i could call up geomview from mosaic.  is
there a way it could be made more streamlined, like: click on
this shell script, then run it (in the process answering a 
few questions, such as where to put things), and have everything
"just work"?  without such a thing it took me an hour or two
to get past 5-10 technical roadblocks.
